The charms of Palermo, Sicily's capital, have tempted Mediterranean conquerors like the Greeks, Romans, Vandals, Arabs, Normans, Swabians, and Bourbons. A land of myth and legend... horses pulling decorated carts, villas, Greek temples, a scent of almonds, vineyards and citrus, a glass of marsala with a "cassata"

Royal Palace

Using the wealth coming from Palermo's position as the capital of a great cosmopolitan kingdom, in about 1130, Roger II added to the architectural splendour of Sicily with the creation of his Royal Palace. Inside this complex construction, he added a Palace chapel (the "Palatine Chapel"), dedicated to St. Peter, which is the most magnificent example of medieval art in Palermo. The Royal Palace so impressed General George S. Patton that he made his headquarters here in 1943
