Caesarea

Caesarea Maritima, once called Caesarea Palaestina,  was a city and harbor built by Herod the Great in the 1st century BC. Today, its ruins remain on the Mediterranean coast between Tel Aviv and Haifa. Once a Roman port city, it has been run and overrun through the ages.

Caesarea lay in ruins when the Ottomans settled in the 19th century, damaging the ruins in the process. In the last half century, however, archaeologists have found Crusader ramparts and the theater of the Roman city.

Although it is best know for the Roman aqueduct that carried water to the ancient city, Caesarea has recently become home to the world's first underwater museum, with points of interest marked along underwater trails through the ancient harbor for divers to explore.
