Scholars dispute whether Mount Tabor was the actual sight of the Transfiguration of Christ, during which Jesus began to radiate light, but nonetheless this is where the event is traditionally commemorated by Christians. The mount stands solitary, rising from the plain, and is also the site of several historical battles. The Franciscan Church of the Transfiguration was built on the peak in 1924, atop the ruins of two earlier churches. A Greek Orthodox church venerating the Transfiguration is nearby, and host to an annual all-night vigil as part of its Feast of the Transfiguration. |
