Ferries arrive at the charming seaside port of Marina Grande, where the arms of two quays welcome the visitor to the beautiful island of Capri. A funicular sweeps you up the hill to the town with its legendary views.

Until 1928, the marina was a natural reef, and passengers rowed ashore from their boats in dinghies. Now it is a spacious seaside resort with a wide beach and international visitors.

The picturesque houses near the beach are typical of traditional Capri fishermen’s homes, with an upper level for living space and a lower housing boats. Originally, these homes were built right on the sea line, but the rebuilding of the port has changed that, and the only evidence is old photographs of Capri.

These quaint houses serve as a reminder of Capri’s origins as a seafaring island with a unique history and culture.
