DAY 3 (Saturday) - Rome, Vatican Museum, St. Peter's Basilica
This morning, it’s a 10 minute drive to another country – Vatican City!
We’ll start with the Vatican Museum – a treasure trove of ancient Greek sculptures, medieval tapestries and Renaissance paintings. Our visit continues through the Sistine Chapel, the room where the Pope is elected. Next we visit St. Peter’s Basilica, by far the largest church in Christendom. We’ll see Michelangelo’s Pieta, sculpted when he was just 24, as well as Bernini’s seven-story bronze canopy located above the main altar.
Next we drive by the Mausoleum of Hadrian, usually known as Castel Sant’Angelo - a towering cylindrical building which was initially appointed by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family. Tonight, enjoy dinner on your own. There are plenty of great restaurants and pizzerias in the neighborhood of our hotel. Your tour guide will be happy to make suggestions according to your taste! BB
DAY 4 (Sunday) - The Castelli Romani (Genzano, Castel Gandolfo, Marino, Frascati), Rome Sightseeing, Dinner Out in Trastevere
Just outside of Rome are the “Castelli Romani” - old fortified villages set among chestnut trees, vineyards, olive groves and lakes. They were the vacation towns of the Roman noblemen and the Popes. We drive south of the city, along the Appian Way, to charming Genzano. We stop to view the Lake of Nemi, dedicated to the pagan goddess Diana. And visit the Castel Gandolfo, where for three months every summer the Pope resides.
On to Marino, famous for its wine festival when real wine flows freely from the fountain in the main square.
Finally we come to Frascat. Time to enjoy a stroll through town and lunch on your own. Try the famous “porchetta sandwich” with white Frascati wine. Our tour continues in Rome with the most important of the Seven Hills of Rome, the Capitoline – home of Jupiter, Marcello’s theater, Jewish Ghetto, Largo Argentina and the Circus Maximus.
Then we’ll enter the Colosseum, reliving the brutal entertainment of the gladiators and the lions, refereed by the Emperor himself.
Next we review the Roman Forum, Trajan’s Column and the astonishing “Wedding Cake” monument to Victor Emmanuel in Piazza Venezia.
Tonight we enjoy a fun dinner in the characteristic district of Trastevere, one of the centers of Roman nightlife. This lively area of tiny winding streets gives a taste of what one imagines Italy to be like, with cobbled streets and music filled trattorias on every corner. BB, D
DAY 5 (Monday) - Rome, Siena, Dinner in Hotel
This morning, after breakfast, we head north for Siena, “The Beloved” city of Tuscany.
Its historical center has been declared a Unesco World Heritage Site. We visit the famed Piazza del Campo, one of Europe’s greatest medieval squares, and the site of Siena’s famous two- times-a-year horse race, the Palio de Siena. We visit Siena’s town hall, Palazzo Pubblico, a beautiful gothic building which sits on Piazza del Campo by the bell tower, and the enchanting Duomo featuring the most ornate mosaic floor in all Italy. It took 200 years and 40 artisans to complete! Tonight we’ll enjoy a delicious Tuscan dinner in our hotel. BB, D
DAY 6 (Tuesday) - Siena, San Gimignano, Lunch/Wine Tasting, Chianti, Siena
Tuscany is a region renowned for its wine and today we’ll get to enjoy a typical Tuscan lunch and wine tasting, after a visit to San Gimignano, another town declared by UNESCO to be part of the World’s Architectural Heritage.
We’ll view the 14 towers that dominate the skyline of this medieval town, which is also known as the City of Beautiful Towers. Next, we’ll drive through the beautiful Chianti landscape with its gentle hills before returning to Siena. Dinner is on your own tonight. BB, L
DAY 7 (Wednesday) - Siena, Florence, Siena, Dinner Out Tonight
This morning we depart for Florence, the city of Dante, Boccaccio, Botticelli & Da Vinci! Enjoy a breathtaking view of the city atop Piazzale Michelangelo, followed by a tour of the Academy of Fine Arts where Michelangelo’s proud “David” stands. Then to Giotto’s Bell Tower and the Baptistery with its renowned “Gates of Paradise” doors.
We follow the medieval streets to the most striking square in Florence, Piazza della Signoria, where we have an external view of the Santa Croce Church, Michelangelo’s final resting place.
Later this afternoon we return to Siena in time to enjoy dinner in a local restaurant. BB, D
DAY 8 (Thursday) - Siena, Bologna, City Sightseeing, Dinner in Hotel
Next we travel to Bologna, the gastronomic capital of Italy. To Italians, Bologna is known as the city of the Two Towers; worldwide it’s known as the city of lasagna, tagliatelle, tortellini, Bolognese sauce and mortadella. Good food must help boost brain power so that’s probably why Bologna is home to the oldest university in Europe.
Our sightseeing will include the two adjoining squares, Piazza Maggiore and Piazza del Nettuno that form the heart of Bologna. We’ll also see the Neptune Fountain, the Communal Palace, Governor’s Palace and the Basilica of St. Petronius, the fifth biggest church in the world. At this Basilica, be sure to take in the controversial late gothic fresco representing a scene from Dante’s Inferno, in which Mohammed is being devoured by demons.
Tonight we enjoy a typical Bolognese dinner, with local wines, at our hotel. BB, D
DAY 9 (Friday) - Bologna, Ferrara, Bologna, Dinner Out Tonight
After our nourishing American style buffet breakfast we’ll drive to Ferrara, one of the regions greatest walled towns.
A fine Renaissance town, we’ll visit the Duomo with its triple façade, Este Castle with its moats, towers and battlements and a guided visit of the castle and its dungeons.
We return to Bologna for a dinner out at a fine local restaurant. BB, D
DAY 10 (Saturday) - Bologna, Parma, Stresa, Dinner in Hotel
Parma was the home of the great artist Bodoni (he invented the famous typeface), the conductor Toscanini and Parmesan cheese. Not to mention – prosciutto! Parma is a captivating town and a favorite of art lovers. This morning we visit a parmesan cheese and ham factory followed by a tasting.
Next, we’re off to Stresa on beautiful Lake Maggiore. Dinner in our hotel. BB, D
DAY 11 (Sunday) - Stresa, Como, Stresa, Dinner Out Tonight
For centuries, Stresa has been a popular retreat for Europe’s aristocrats who have endowed the town with a number of beautiful villas. Tourism increased substantially after tunneling of the Simplon Pass allowed train services from north of the Alps to pass through Stresa in 1906.
After breakfast we visit Lake Como, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful lakes in Italy. Many celebrities have or had homes on the shores of Lake Como - Madonna, George Clooney, Gianni Versace, Sylvester Stallone and Richard Branson – Real Estate offices will be open for your convenience!
After returning to Stresa we visit amazing Isola Bella, gently floating in Lake Maggiore. In 1948 author Ernest Hemingway visited Stresa and set part of his 1929 novel, “Farewell to Arms” at our very own hotel - Grand Hotel des Iles Borromees!
Tonight, a final dinner out with our travel friends, great food and wine. BB, D
