Located on a plateau nearly 700 meters above sea level, the city of Piazza Armerina is an amazing find for any lover of history and art.

Established as Piazza during the 11th century Norman era, its historical quarter offers beautiful churches, including a massive Baroque cathedral and the well-preserved Spinelli Castle.

Just a few kilometers outside of town, the Villa Romana del Casale is sought by travelers for its incredible Roman mosaics. The Villa, one of the largest Roman dwellings of its kind to have survived antiquity, contains a remarkable 3500 meters of mosaics. Known for their sociological and artistic value depicting daily Roman life, the mosaics of Villa Romana del Casale are influenced by the North African motifs of the Romans. Smaller artifacts are also housed in the Piazza Armerina's archeological museum.
