Our visit culminates in the Sistine Chapel, renowned for its Renaissance art, especially the ceiling which was painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512. This room, which attracts more than five million visitors each year, is also where the Pope is elected. Next, we visit St. Peter’s Basilica, by far the largest church in Christendom. We’ll see Michelangelo’s Pietà, sculpted when he was just 24 years old, as well as Bernini’s seven story bronze canopy located above the main altar.

The rest of the day is yours to enjoy! Take a stroll along the ancient streets of Rome, enjoy a gelato or go shopping!

Tonight, we thought you’d enjoy a dinner on your own. Ask your tour guide for a recommendation or venture out and explore the local restaurants in Rome! Be sure to try a “Supplì,” a Roman delicacy: A fried ball of rice filled with tomato sauce, meat and melted mozzarella.

(Please note that the visit of St. Peter’s Basilica is subject to availability based on the events planned by the Pope.)

We’ll visit the famous Trevi Fountain (be sure to throw a coin over your shoulder to ensure your return to Italy); next we’ll see the Pantheon – a true architectural wonder! Built between 25 and 27 B.C, it was originally a small temple dedicated to all Roman gods.

We’ll visit San Luigi dei Francesi, home to three Caravaggio paintings (entry subject to availability).

We’ll also visit Piazza Navona a large, historical square in the center of Rome, famous for several art masterpieces by well-known artists such as Bernini and Borromini. Also included in today’s walking tour will be Campo dei Fiori – a Piazza with the most famous market in the old center of Rome.

Rome - Siena City Tour - Florence - Dinner in Hotel

MONDAY: After a hearty breakfast, we’ll enjoy a ride through the Tuscan countryside. We will arrive in Siena for guided tour accompanied by your private guide, you will stroll through the old city which looks like a fascinating maze of alleys that rise and fall and intersect with super picturesque squares allowing you to experience something truly unique.

The guide will show you the oldest bank in the world, the network of medieval alleys and many hidden treasures and will enchant you with an unforgettable visit to the Duomo with its refined Gothic architecture, treasures, and masterpieces.

The Cathedral of Siena is one of the greatest examples of Italian Romanesque-Gothic architecture and it is said that the great composer Richard Wagner, seeing the Cathedral of Siena for the first time, was moved to tears.

Once inside, you will be overwhelmed by the amount of art and beauty hidden within this treasure chest as well as its wonderful marble floor which is a unique example in the history of art. Than we will proceed for Florence known as the “Cradle of the Renaissance,” and for good reason. The city was home to some of the most important artists, thinkers, and patrons of the Renaissance, including Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Botticelli.

Tonight, we’ll enjoy dinner in our hotel. A toast (un brindisi) to Florence and new friends!

Florence - City Tour - Greve in Chianti - Olive Oil Tasting

TUESDAY: This morning, we’ll head out on a city tour of Florence. We will visit the famed Accademia Gallery, best known as the home of Michelangelo’s sculpture: the David, but also home to other sculptures by Michelangelo. Our sightseeing today includes the majestic Duomo built in 1296, Giotto’s Bell Tower and the Baptistery with its renowned “Gates of Paradise” doors.

We follow the medieval streets to the most striking square in Florence, Piazza della Signoria, home of Santa Croce Church, Michelangelo’s final resting place.

This afternoon, we take a ride to Greve in Chianti, a medieval town with a famous triangular-shape piazza which for centuries, has been the location for the Saturday market. Just a few minutes from the center, this countryside is full of vineyards and olive groves , lined with small medieval villages and castles.

Next, we’ll visit one of Tuscany’s top producers of olive oil, Pruneti. Five generations of the Pruneti family have been farming in these hills for over 150 years and today their focus is olive oil production. We’ll enjoy an olive oil tasting and learn about the process of producing olive oil.

Florence - Renaissance Walking Tour - Dinner Out

We’ll be transported back in time as we learn about one of the most powerful dynasties of all times, the Medici family. We’ll see Piazza di San Lorenzo where you can see the distinct mixture of Renaissance and Romanesque architecture. Your local guide will share fun facts about how Florence gave birth to the Renaissance.

We’ll visit Piazza Ognissanti, originally built in the 13th century to accommodate the large crowds that would gather for sermons and was remodeled in the 19th century and now has a neo-Renaissance style. We’ll also see the Palazzo Strozzi, a Renaissance palace built between 1489 and 1538 and is one of the most important examples of Renaissance architecture in Florence and considered to be one of the most beautiful palaces in the world. Also included in our tour is the Ponte Vecchio – a medieval stone bridge that crosses the Arno River, and Piazza San Firenze, a small square in the historic center of Florence, located behind the Palazzo Vecchio.

This afternoon you’ll have free time to enjoy on your own…perhaps some last-minute shopping?

(Please note that the visit of St. Peter’s Basilica is subject to availability based on the events planned by the Pope.)

Rome - Spoleto - Assisi - Dinner in Hotel

WEDNESDAY: This morning after breakfast, we check out of our hotel and travel to the beautiful region of Umbria, also known as Italy’s “Green Heart”. Our first stop will be Spoleto, a hidden gem. This ancient hilltop town is one of the oldest cities in Italy – its history dates back more than 2500 years. It was an important Roman colony and later capital of the Longobard Duchy.

We’ll enjoy a walk through the narrow streets to see the Cathedral, a most complex building with magnificent frescoes by Filippo Lippi (15th century). We’ll come to the bridge called Ponte delle Torri (bridge of the towers), the symbol of Spoleto and one of the city’s panoramic points. It was originally an aqueduct, first built by the Romans then rebuilt in the 12th century to ensure a reliable water supply to Spoleto.

For more than 50 years, Spoleto has been known worldwide for hosting the Festival of the Two Worlds, featuring artists from all over the world in concerts, dance and various exhibitions.

Next, we’ll drive to Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis, one of Italy’s most famous patron saints. We’ll check in to our beautiful hotel and then head out on a walking tour with a local guide. We visit the Pala Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, an important pilgrimage site dedicated to St. Francis. We will also visit a crypt where the remains of St. Francis are kept.

Of course, we’ll have to stop for an olive oil tasting at a family-owned oil mill as the extra virgin olive oils from Umbria are some of the finest in the country.

Tonight, we’ll relax in our hotel and enjoy dinner with fine local wines.

Assisi - Gubbio - Wine Tasting & Lunch - Assisi

THURSDAY: This morning, we depart for Gubbio, a well-preserved medieval town dating back to the Etruscan period. We’ll take a guided walking tour of this wonderful medieval city, famous for the largest Christmas tree in the world.

We’ll see the Palace of the Consuls, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Spoleto, located in the main square: Piazza del Duomo. The palace, which was built in the early 13th century by the city of Spoleto to serve as the seat of the city’s government, is one of the most important examples of medieval civic architecture in Italy.

Next, we’ll enjoy a wine tasting and lunch at Cantina Semonte.

After lunch we’ll return to our hotel and the rest of the day is yours to enjoy. Be sure to ask your tour leader for restaurant suggestions.

Assisi - Lake Trasimeno - Maggiore Island - Wine Tasting & Lunch - Perugia - Assisi - Dinner Out

FRIDAY: This morning, we depart for Lake Trasimento. We will arrive at the lakeside town of Tuoro where we will take a cruise (weather permitting) to the islands and beautiful areas of the lake. We’ll navigate towards Maggiore Island for a short break and a chance to admire the Castle of Gugliemi, amongst other wonders.

Next, we’ll return to shore and will take a ride to the “Carini Family Winery” to enjoy a wine tasting and lunch.

After lunch, we’ll return to Perugia for a walking tour with your tour leader. Perugia, a popular destination for tourists who come to explore its charming street, museums and art galleries is also a food lover’s paradise! We’ll have some free time to shop or have ice cream.

Tonight, we’ll enjoy dinner out at a local restaurant with fine wines.

Assisi - Lucignano - La Bagnaia Siena - Dinner in Siena

SATURDAY: This morning, after breakfast, we’ll check out of our hotel and enjoy a ride through the Tuscan countryside. On our way to Florence, we’ll stop to visit Lucignano, one of the most fascinating but lesser-known medieval destinations of Tuscany. Here we will discover a past that’s still alive thanks to hidden treasures like the unique “Tree of Life,” a masterpiece of Gothic jewelry in the shape of a tree.

You’ll have some free time to enjoy a quick lunch before we depart for La Bagnaia Resort.

This afternoon, we’ll enjoy a guided tour of Siena. We’ll stroll through this amazing city which looks like a fascinating maze of alleys that rise and fall and intersect.

Our guided tour will include the elaborately carved Duomo, one of the greatest examples of Italian Romanesque-Gothic architecture. It is said that the great composer Richard Wagner, upon seeing the Cathedral of Siena for the first time, was moved to tears. You’ll be amazed at the art and beauty as well as its wonderful marble floor which is a unique example in the history of art.

Tonight, we’ll enjoy dinner out in Siena with fine local wines.

La Bagnaia Siena - Florence City Sightseeing - The David - La Bagnaia Siena - Dinner in Siena

SUNDAY: Florence – also known as the “Cradle of the Renaissance,” awaits our inspection!

“Breathtaking” is the only word to describe one’s first view of Michelangelo’s David. Yes, it’s quite large and detailed. But the real magic is in how Michelangelo transformed a lifeless rock into a man – full of pride, wary of his adversary, yet quietly confident. All with just a hammer and chisel!

You’ll have some free time in Florence to shop and wander around.

Tonight, we’ll enjoy a delicious dinner in our hotel with fine local wines.

La Bagnaia Siena - San Gimignano - Truffle Hunt - Olive Oil & Wine Tasting - Cooking Class & Dinner

MONDAY: Today, we will drive through the beautiful rolling hills of Chianti for a most unique winery visit but first we’ll stop for a tour of San Gimignano along the way. This medieval town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is known for its 14th-century towers, which rise above the town’s skyline.

Once at the winery, you’ll get to meet our dear friend, Pierluigi Giachi, the world’s most enchanting and entertaining sommelier. First, we’ll start with a truffle hunt: accompanied by a guide with his trained dogs you’ll watch as they skillfully use their noses to find these delicacies.

Next, we’ll enjoy an olive oil and wine tasting while taking a fun, hands-on cooking class with a chef. I hope this meal tastes good because it will be served to you for dinner! This will be a truly fun, memorable day!

Flight Home - La Bagnaia Siena - Florence - USA

TUESDAY: This morning our bus will take us back to Florence airport for our return flights home, arriving in the USA the same day. While we say “arrivederci” to Italy, we realize we’re taking a little piece of it back home with us….and maybe some wine too! Arrivederci Italia!

12 Day North Continental 2024

12 Days / 10 Nights   Starting at $3395 PP (Land Rate)

The 'Continental' gives you the chance to dine on your own in Italy! Your tour guide will be happy to suggest everything from trattorias to the finest dining experiences.

Itinerary

Depart USA - Venice

SUNDAY: Boarding your overnight flight, you’re off on the adventure of a lifetime!

Arrive in Venice - Afternoon at Leisure

MONDAY: Benvenuti in Italia! We are pleased to offer complimentary transfers from Venice airport to your hotel at scheduled times. Your Perillo representative will be at the airport to greet you.

Venice is breathtaking with its misty lagoon and palaces seemingly floating on water. You can enjoy this afternoon sightseeing and getting lost. No one wants to get lost while visiting a city, but Venice is an exception! A maze of narrow alleys and canals, the best way to discover it is by wandering around with no pre-defined route.

This evening, at 6 o’clock, we’ll meet our tour leader for a brief orientation and welcome drink in our hotel. After that, you can enjoy dinner on your own; nothing beats dining in a cozy Venetian restaurant enjoying local specialties and fine wines. Whichever place you choose, be sure to try the Squid Ink Risotto or Pasta!

Venice - City Sightseeing - Isle of Murano

TUESDAY: This morning we’ll meet our expert local guide for a walking tour of St. Mark’s Square, the great Byzantine Basilica, the Bridge of Sighs, and an inside visit of the Doge’s Palace.

Next, we’ll board our motorboat to the beautiful island of Murano, where we will visit one of the oldest glass-blowing factories. Our glass masters will show us two different glass blowing techniques: the hand-blown glass technique creating a small vase and the carved glass technique, creating a small sculpture like a glass horse or fish.

This afternoon you’ll have a chance to get lost in the city’s labyrinth of canals, bridges and tiny piazzas. Being a small island, it’s impossible to stray very far. But it won’t hurt to master the phrase Dov’è Piazza San Marco?

Tonight, instead of a traditional dinner, do as the Venetians do! Enjoy cichetti, Venetian-style tapas, served in various pubs all over Venice.

Venice - Padua - Florence

WEDNESDAY: We’re off to Florence today with an inspiring stop along the way. Visitors to Padua are often surprised by a sense of deep spirituality. St. Anthony (patron Saint of lost objects) is interred here in the serene Basilica which dates back to the 1200s. Next on to Florence! Home of Dante, Boccaccio, Botticelli, Da Vinci, and some say, the best gelato in Italy!

Back at the hotel, our tour director is happy to offer this evening’s restaurant suggestions. Be sure to try the world famous Florentine steak – “Bistecca alla Fiorentina.”

Florence - City Sightseeing Including The David

THURSDAY: Our day of sightseeing includes the majestic Duomo Complex built in 1296, Giotto’s Bell Tower and the Baptistery with its renowned Gates of Paradise doors.

We follow the medieval streets to the most striking square in Florence, Piazza della Signoria.

“Breathtaking” is the only word to describe one’s first view of Michelangelo’s David. Yes, it’s quite large and detailed. But the real magic is in how Michelangelo transformed a lifeless rock into a man—full of pride, wary of his adversary, yet quietly confident. All with just a hammer and a chisel!

You’ll be sure to find a perfect Florentine dinner spot tonight.

Florence - Pisa - Oil & Wine Tasting & Early Dinner in Tuscany - Florence

FRIDAY: The bell tower of Pisa is among the most instantly recognizable structures on earth. Architects say it would be world famous even if it were perfectly straight. This morning we’ll see for ourselves, along with the beautiful Cathedral and Baptistery.

This afternoon we’ll visit Tenuta Torciano winery in Tuscany and meet our dear friend, Pierluigi Giachi, the world’s most enchanting sommelier. You’ll learn about the grape, the nose, food pairings and most importantly — which glass to use with each wine!

You’ll also get to experience an olive oil and truffle oil tasting…and of course have some fresh bread with it! This will all be followed by a fabulous dinner and wine tasting. Cin-Cin!

We’ll return to Florence for a free evening on our own to explore or perhaps go shopping for some souvenirs.

Florence - Naples

SATURDAY: This morning, we’re off to Naples, birthplace of the Neapolitan pizza.

This beautiful city is famous for its mix of Old- World character and modern charm. One of the oldest cities in Europe, Naples historic center (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is filled with art, architecture, and archaeology, but the best part may be the wood-fired pizza! You’ll be staying at one of the best hotels in Naples – a well-known 4 star hotel on Naples seafront promenade, a lively spot right in front of Castel dell’Ovo – the Hotel Royal Continental.

Naples - Capri - Naples

SUNDAY: This morning you’ll be taken to Capri, the world’s most enchanting, breathtaking island. Upon arrival, we take a private boat ride for a tour of the island. We cruise around the magnificent Faraglioni, Capri’s most iconic sight. These mythical towering rock formations, which jut out from the Mediterranean just off the island’s coast, were formed over the years by erosion from ocean waves.

Next, we visit one of the lesser-known but equally beautiful sea caves, the Grotta Bianca. Once we arrive back on Capri, we have free time to explore the island on our own or take advantage of a special optional excursion with your tour leader.

Tonight, still glowing from the sun, it’s time to enjoy another fine gastronomic experience.

Naples - Pompeii - Rome

MONDAY: POMPEII - Imagine…. a city perfectly preserved as it was on that fateful day, 2000 years ago, when ash and lava literally stopped in its tracks. You’ll see the tragic fossils of people attempting to escape along with children and dogs.

Later this morning, we continue on to Rome, viewing the Bay of Naples along the way.

A few hours later, we’ll enter the gates of Rome and settle into our hotel.

Rome - Vatican Museum & Sistine Chapel - St. Peter's Basilica - Afternoon at Leisure

TUESDAY: This morning we visit Vatican City, headquarters for more than a billion Catholics worldwide. We begin at the Vatican Museum, a massive collection of sculptures, paintings and tapestries.

Our visit culminates in the Sistine Chapel, the room where the pope is elected. We enter in total silence, not wanting to disturb Michelangelo’s famed frescoes, depicting stories from the Bible and the End of Times.

You’ll be fascinated by which of Michelangelo’s contemporaries he assigned to heaven and which to hell.

We’ll also visit St. Peter’s Basilica. We’ll see Michelangelo’s Pietà, sculpted when he was just 24, and Bernini’s seven-story bronze canopy soaring high above the main altar.

(Please note that the visit of St. Peter’s Basilica is subject to availability based on the events planned by the Pope.)

This afternoon, Rome is all yours to explore!

Tonight, treat yourself to one of Rome’s fine restaurants for a fabulous dinner. May we suggest some Roman specialties Bucatini all’Amatriciana; Spaghetti alla Carbonara; Roasted lamb with garlic and rosemary; stuffed artichokes …is your appetite whet yet?

Rome - Sightseeing - Afternoon at Leisure

WEDNESDAY: Hail Caesar! All aboard our chariot for a relaxing, panoramic driving tour of Imperial Rome including the Roman Forum, downtown ancient Rome, the Circus Maximus, and the Great Synagogue, built in the heart of the Jewish quarter.

Then we’ll enter the Colosseum, reliving the brutal entertainment of the gladiators and the lions, refereed by the Emperor himself.

This afternoon, Rome is all yours! Shop, fountain hop, explore to your heart’s content.

Tonight, treat yourself to one of Rome’s fine restaurants for a delizioso dinner.

*Colosseum entrance subject to ticket availability*

Flight Home - Rome - USA

THURSDAY: This morning you board your flight home.

Tonight, we enjoy an authentic Neapolitan dinner in our hotel.

Amalfi - Capri - Amalfi

TUESDAY: This morning, we board our hydrofoil to the world’s most enchanting island – Capri. We’ll enjoy a private boat tour around the island (weather permitting). We’ll cruise by the magnificent Faraglioni, Capri’s iconic rock formations which tower above the Mediterranean Sea.

Next, we visit one of the lesser known but equally beautiful sea caves, the Grotta Bianca. Then we’ll have free time to explore the island on our own or take advantage of a special optional excursion with our tour leader.

This afternoon we return to Amalfi where you can relax before you head out for dinner on your own. Ask your tour guide for some recommendations.

Amalfi - Day at Leisure

WEDNESDAY: We thought you would enjoy a full day of leisure so today you are free to explore this beautiful city on your own…or you can relax at the hotel pool!

Amalfi - Taormina - Dinner in Hotel

THURSDAY: This morning we drive South to Calabria to board our ferry across the Straits of Messina to Sicily!

Our home in Taormina will be the great Villa Diodoro, which boasts stunning views of Mt. Etna and the bay of Naxos. Tonight, we enjoy a delicious Sicilian dinner in our hotel.

*This will be a long day so remember to wear comfortable clothes & shoes!

Taormina City Tour - Dinner Out Tonight

FRIDAY: After this morning’s leisurely tour, you’ll know why Taormina is known as the “Jewel of Italy.“ Its winding streets and secluded gardens are truly enchanting. The snow-covered volcano, Mt. Etna, serves as a dramatic backdrop to the well-preserved Greek and Roman outdoor theaters we’ll be visiting.

This afternoon is all yours! Why not stroll the medieval streets lined with interesting little shops, take a dip in the hotel pool, or treat yourself to one of Sicily’s greatest inventions – the cannoli! It’s like heaven in your mouth!

Tonight, we enjoy dinner and great “Vino Siciliano” at a fine local restaurant.

Taormina - Mt. Etna Winery Visit & Tasting - Light Lunch

SATURDAY: This morning, you’ll meet one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Mt. Etna is in an almost constant state of eruption. But don’t worry – we’ll keep a safe distance!

The fertile volcanic soil supports extensive agriculture, orchards, and vineyards. So, let’s visit a local winery for a tour, a wine tasting and a light lunch!

Tonight, you can enjoy dinner on your own. Have you tried pesce spada yet? Swordfish is Sicily’s favorite seafood.

Taormina - Cefalu - Palermo

SUNDAY: We’re off to Palermo, stopping along the way for a fascinating visit of Cefalù, a coastal town in Northern Sicily. We enjoy a guided visit of the famous Norman cathedral, a 12th century fortress-like structure with elaborate Byzantine mosaics and soaring twin towers. The Cathedral has a founding legend: Normal King Roger II made a vow to God during a dangerous sailing trip from Southern Italy. His life was in great danger and he promised to build a wonderful church in the place where he would have landed, if he survived. Roger did in fact survive, disembarked in Cefalù and kept his promise and built a cathedral there.

We’ll have some free time to walk around this charming town, shop and have lunch on our own before heading to Palermo.

Tonight, enjoy dinner on your own. Be sure to end your dinner with a delicious dessert that originated in Palermo: The Cassata Siciliana.

Palermo - City Tour - Dinner in Hotel

MONDAY: Today we will start our day by visiting the Cathedral, built on the ruins of the largest mosque, which houses the relics of Rosalia, patron saint of Palermo. Then we will walk through Ballarò, one of the oldest street markets in Sicily, taking in an explosion of colors and scents of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and fish. Vendors shout very loud—in Sicilian dialect—to attract people and to promote their specialties. This will be the best way to experience the unique atmosphere of daily life in Sicily. After visiting the market, we will admire the grandiose Fontana Pretoria, and we will end our walk at the Theater of the Sun, also known as “The Quattro Canti”, the heart of the old city.

This afternoon you will be free to enjoy it as you please… perhaps to buy some last-minute gifts to take home with you.

Tonight, we enjoy our final dinner together in our hotel.

Flight Home - Palermo - USA

TUESDAY: This morning we head to the Palermo airport for our flight home, arriving in the USA the same day. While we say “arrivederci” to Italy, we realize we’re taking a little piece of it back home with us….and maybe some wine too! Arrivederci Bella Sicilia!

First trip to Italy – first tour experience – everything was outstanding. We skipped lines and had the best accommodations and tour guides. Well done Perillo!

Mr. A.L.

A few days ago, my Wife and I returned from the North Continental Tour. We had never taken any tours before and, although we heard great things about Perillo, we weren’t quite sure what to expect. I am pleased to report that the tour exceeded all of our expectations. The hotels were excellent and in perfect proximity to see the many sites of Italy. Getting to, from and into each of the places we visited was a breeze. I’m sure that I do not need to tell you how wonderful each of the places we visited were or how great the food was. But I did want to tell you that our tour guide Paola really made our trip the outstanding vacation that it was. Her knowledge of history, food, wine, geography etc. was exceptional. She was always available to answer any questions or provide any assistance. As you can see in these photos, we had a great time and enjoyed each other’s company.
